Sustainability, Life Cycle Analysis

Building Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)

A Life Cycle Analysis should take into account the modules listed below of a declared Environmental Product Declaration, and adopt a ‘cradle to cradle’ approach in order to encourage the use of recyclable products and ensure materials are returned into the manufacturing process as a circular economy.

At CA Group we always seek to demonstrate the true performance of our systems, taking into account all characteristics (good and bad) to present our clients with true data to assist in the selection of products. By avoiding 'cherry picking' of a restricted data range CA Group puts the power into the hands of the specifier, giving whole life data and ensuring that we are encouraging the recycling of building products and avoiding the use of products that cannot be recycled or easily disposed of.

The Cycle

A1-A3:
Production stage (raw material supply, transport to production centre, manufacturing of finished product)

A4-A5:
Production stage (transport to construction site, installation of finished product)

A4-A5:
Production stage (transport to construction site, installation of finished product)

B1-B5:
Use stage (related to the building fabric and including maintenance, repair, replacement)

C1-C4:
End of life (deconstruction, transport away from site, processing for reuse or recycling, or disposal)

D:
Reuse, recycling and recovery

“Net Zero” is the current buzz word throughout the construction industry, and as such the ‘embodied carbon’ or ‘recycled content’ within new construction materials and products is under scrutiny, with the perception that components manufactured with lower embodied carbon, or greater quantities of recycled content are more sustainable. Yet a better understanding of the picture is essential when choosing products.
