BREEAM

CA Group provides independently assess EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations), giving the maximum BREEAM credits available under this section. Furthermore our solutions are designed to be low maintenance (Tata Confidex®), future proofed (Chronus® Ready and FW15 as standard), easily repaired and fully recyclable or inert at end of life. Our solutions therefore represent one of the best possible metal envelope options for sustainable building practices.

BREEAM is an environmental assessment method for establishing the theoretical credentials of a building or development, measured by a series of criteria. For many planning departments, achieving a set BREEAM standard is a requirement of planning for new developments. For many public buildings, achieving a minimum BREEAM standard is a prerequisite for funding as well, sometimes enshrined in local or devolved government policies.

BREEAM

Buildings will be graded as Outstanding, Excellent, Very Good, Good or a Pass.

Outstanding: Less than the top 1% of UK new non-domestic building (innovator)
Excellent: Top 10% of UK new non-domestic buildings (best practice)
Very Good: Top 25% of UK new non-domestic buildings (advanced good practice)
Good: Top 50% of UK new non-domestic buildings (intermediate good practice)
Pass: Top 75% of UK new non-domestic buildings (standard good practice).

For material suppliers of construction products the relevant section within the BREEAM guide is the Materials section. MAT01 is a life cycle assessment for the building as a whole, following a process of comparing the building against a benchmark and, ideally, verifying by independent third party. It covers all aspects of the development, both in construction and in-use, and is determined using a specific LCA calculation tool.

A Life Cycle Analysis should take into account the following modules of a declared Environmental Product Declaration, and adopt a ‘cradle to cradle’ approach in order to encourage the use of recyclable products and ensure materials are returned into the manufacturing process as a circular economy.

“Net Zero” is the current buzz word throughout the construction industry, and as such the ‘embodied carbon’ or ‘recycled content’ within new construction materials and products is under scrutiny, with the perception that components manufactured with lower embodied carbon, or greater quantities of recycled content are more sustainable. Yet a better understanding of the picture is essential when choosing products.
