LPS 1181-1 is a reaction to fire test for cladding products used in the external envelope of a building. The test itself is sometimes referred to as a ‘garage test’ or occasionally ‘room corner test’ and is intended to assess the reaction of products or an assembly of products in the developing stages of a fire. It exposes the system to a high growth fire with a significant peak heat output, however the duration of the test is relatively short and is not comparable with BS 476-22 or BS EN 1361-1 fire resistance tests, or BS 8414-2 façade system test which is a large scale test.
LPCB certification carries significant relevance in the metal cladding and roofing industry due to advice from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) which states that “in respect of external composite panels, these must be suitable for the intended end use application and should either have non-combustible cores or be LPCB approved to the appropriate requirements of LPS 1191 and fully satisfy insurers fire resistance requirements (insulation and integrity) through appropriate testing”.
LPS 1181-1 carries two primary grades of performance. Grade EXT-B confirms the system tested conforms to the requirements of the standard and in accordance with external building envelope performance. Grade EXT-A additionally indicates a level of fire resistance that can be compared to BS 476-22 resistance rating in minutes for Insulation.
