Reaction to Fire, BS EN 13501-1 “Euroclass”

The move towards European norms away from historic British Standards has been led, on the subject of fire performance, by the classification of building materials under the BS EN 13501-1 Reaction to Fire standard, commonly referred to as the product Euroclass. This standard clearly defines products as being non-combustible, of limited combustibility or combustible. This is of particular relevance for any building over 18m in height, and also of significant importance for residential purpose buildings above 11m in height.

Building Regulations

The last few years have seen significant amendments to Approved Document B which is still the primary means of demonstrating compliance with building regulations.

BS EN 13501-1:2018 defines products as follows:

The Reaction to Fire index is what is commonly referred to as the Euroclass, and indicates the performance of an entire product or component, i.e. the product as it would leave the factory gate. This clarifies previous standards which referred to Surface Spread of Flame, and could be confused with the surface properties only not taking into account the performance of material physically bonded or inherently part of the product in its manufactured form.
